An Evolution to Results-Based Governance
A high-performing Association hinges on good governance. Over the past few years, the CAR governance structure has shifted from a policy-oriented model toward a results-based framework that places primary responsibility for oversight and accountability with the Board of Directors and the onus for planning and delivering on results with the CEO. In other words, the Board sets direction, monitors, and reports on results that are executed by the CEO and his team. [Read more…] about An Evolution to Results-Based Governance

President's Message
I am incredibly honoured to be the new president of the Canadian Society of Abdominal Radiology (CSAR). I want to acknowledge our past presidents, Drs. Silvia Chang and Tanya Chawla, who have grown the society to where it is now and fostered an environment of collegiality, inclusivity, and scholarship.
I am the clinical and academic Section Head of Abdominal Imaging for Manitoba and a Professor of Radiology at the University of Manitoba. Over the years it has been my privilege to get to know many of the other abdominal radiologists throughout the country. Initially, I made most of my connections through the Canadian Association of Radiology (which remains a valued partner of CSAR) and since CSAR was created, I now feel that I have a robust network of abdominal colleagues who I can call on for support and assistance.
This, to me, is one of the greatest strengths of the CSAR. The CSAR brings us together to answer clinical questions, collaborate on research, educate each other, and create consensus practice guidelines. I have met some of my best friends through CAR and CSAR. As the new president, I would like to work on increasing our opportunities for networking and communicating easily with one another on a day-to-day basis, so that any abdominal imager in Canada feels supported.
At the same time, I wish to continue our other core goals of education (with regular webinars for membership on hot topics in abdominal radiology) and shaping clinical practice through the development of white papers and guidelines. Our work on topics such as prostate MRI, the evaluation of right lower quadrant pain, assessing incidental findings, and the modern workup of endometriosis has had a tangible impact on Canadian radiology. It is incredibly satisfying to have seen the society evolve from the planning stages to become such a positive influence in our specialty.
I am thrilled to partner with Dr. Angus Hartery, a renowned Canadian educator, who is our new Vice-President. Together we hope that any radiologist practicing abdominal imaging who has not yet signed up for CSAR, consider becoming a member. Join us on our journey and become part of the family!

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Canadian Radiology – Featuring Women in Radiology
Meet Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing, CAR member and leader of Canadian Radiology Women
The evidence is increasingly clear that a diverse physician population that reflects the diversity of the general population can contribute to the provision of high-quality care to patients. There is a paucity of data in Canada in regards to racial diversity in radiology. We do know that women are underrepresented in radiology practices, despite an overrepresentation of women in Canadian medical schools. Women are also underrepresented in academia and leadership within radiology.
Highlights from Your Board of Directors
On Saturday, October 17, your Board of Directors met to discuss priorities in the face of the pressures of the pandemic outbreak. The Board remains committed to advancing the radiology profession and supporting our members through the pandemic and beyond. Patient Care, Advocacy, and Education continue to be the top priorities for the CAR and are all reflective of the most recent membership survey.
