The Importance of Getting Together

Delegates shared that the biggest improvement from previous Annual Scientific Meetings was the longer breaks and additional networking events. The Welcome Reception, and its Montréal themed menu of smoked meat sandwiches and poutine, was an exciting start to the social events of the meeting, generously supported by Hologic. The CAR's corporate partners were the featured supporters at the Vendor Cocktail. The Radiologist-in-Training Reception was a major highlight, supported by GE HealthCare, as was the newly added Vendor Appreciation Social on Saturday afternoon.

Attendees were able to connect digitally as well, by engaging with the CAR 2024 event app. Discussion groups were created for different subspecialties, social topics, and to engage with CAR 2024 Ambassador Dr. Emil Lee. The Leaderboard contest engaged everyone’s competitive side, where participants could collect Game Codes to gain points for amazing prizes. Congratulations to the winners Ruan Bedeir (1st Place), Milad Hamwi (2nd Place), and Jessica Matschek (3rd Place).

For those looking to get more involved in their subspecialty, each of the Affiliate Societies held their own Business and Networking Meetings to discuss current projects, present awards, and meet prospective members. They were also featured during the Vendor Cocktail, with the opportunity for attendees to meet and talk with the Executives of each society, as well as the chance to earn leaderboard points. On the evening of Aprill 11, the Affiliate Societies came together for a Networking Dinner at Pangea.

Annual Day on the Hill: Advocating for Capacity in Medical Imaging and Showcasing Radiology

October 25, 2024

With the fall return of Parliament, the CAR has the opportunity to bring forward the needs of Canadian radiologists and patients to the federal government through our advocacy recommendations. This year, the CAR’s 9th Annual Day on the Hill takes place on Tuesday, October 29, and will consist of meetings with key federal ministers and demonstrating the use of medical imaging equipment on-site.

Engaging with officials at the federal level is critical to ensuring that the priorities for Canadian radiologists are clearly and adequately conveyed to key decision-makers, and to raise awareness of the crucial role of not only radiologists but Medical Radiation Technologists and Sonographers in Canada’s healthcare system.

The CAR will focus on several key issues with federal ministers:

1.

That the federal government spearheads a national effort to recruit and retain radiologists, medical radiation technologists, and sonographers as part of a national health human resource strategy.

2.

That parliamentarians include the voices of radiologists in their deliberations, particularly deliberations related to breast cancer screening guidelines, of which radiologists are integral players to maintain standards and deliver service.

3.

That the federal government invests in a cost-neutral manner to evolve the medical device licensing process to include post-market surveillance through Health Artificial Intelligence Validation Network.

4.

That the federal government supports ensuring provinces integrate Clinical Decision Support into their electronic medical record systems.

5.

That the federal government guides an investment of $2 billion over three years for radiology equipment to improve access to modern medical imaging equipment.

An additional feature of this year’s Day on the Hill is the mobile MSK and ultrasound clinics that will be on-site to provide real-time demonstrations. In addition, there will be a mobile breast imaging unit on the Hill to showcase how radiology can support smaller more remote communities in mammography procedures. Having imaging equipment in-person will allow the CAR to better demonstrate the radiologist’s role in imaging different body parts and to provide evidence of the CAR’s objectives grounded in real-life context.

The CAR is grateful for the opportunity to advocate on behalf of Canadian radiologists and patients to the federal government. Stay tuned for photos and a full recap of the day.

RSNA 2024: Connecting on Important Issues on an International Scale

December 27, 2024

The CAR was thrilled to return to Chicago for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)’s Annual Meeting from December 1-5. With hundreds of presenters and contributors, Canadian radiology was impeccably represented on the international stage.

The RNSA event is the world’s largest scientific conference for radiologists, and this year’s theme was Building Intelligent Connections. A prominent focus of the event was innovation in Artificial Intelligence in the field of radiology. Over 40,000 radiologists and other medical imaging professionals attended from around the world.

The CAR contributed to the discussion on Artificial Intelligence at the Member Exclusive Canadian Reception, hosted at the Palmer House Hilton, that featured an expert presentation from Dr. Jaron Chong called Exploring the Future of AI in Radiology. The presentation was followed by an exciting evening of networking with Canadian radiologists.

Our sponsors for this event included Bayer, Bracco, Eisai, GE HealthCare, Hologic, Lanier Healthcare, MD Financial Management (MDFM)/Scotiabank, Nuance, Philips, Rad AI, and Siemens Healthineers. We thank them for supporting the CAR.

While in Chicago, the CAR met with leaders and colleagues from the RSNA, the Royal College of Radiology (UK), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), and more.

“It is always a pleasure to connect with colleagues from other countries and recount experiences from our own unique healthcare environments,” said Dr. Ania Kielar, CAR President. “We discussed best practices and shared insights on pertinent initiatives like clinical decision support, education, and AI.”

Thanks to all the CAR members who made the trip to RSNA 2024 and expertly represented the Canadian radiology community!
