Practice Guidelines

In keeping with our mission to promote safe, efficient and quality healthcare for Canadians, the Canadian Association of Radiologists works closely with recognized experts and other professional bodies to develop national standards and guidelines. Our goal is to ensure the optimal procedure is done in the optimal way so that Canadians can benefit fully from diagnostic imaging and from the skills and expertise of radiologists.

National Practice Guidelines

The CAR’s evidence‐based practice guidelines define the principles of practice that will obtain the best radiological result. Serving as guidelines for healthcare professionals and industry, CAR practice guidelines promote high quality care for diagnosis and treatment.

The practice guidelines of the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) are not rules, but are guiding principles that attempt to define codes of practice that should generally produce optimal radiological care.

The physician and medical high-quality physicist may modify an existing practice guideline as determined by the individual patient and available resources. Adherence to CAR practice guidelines will not assure a successful outcome in every situation.

The practice guidelines should not be deemed inclusive of all proper methods of care or exclusive of other methods of care reasonably directed to obtaining the same results.

The practice guidelines are not intended to establish a legal standard of care or conduct, and deviation from a practice guideline does not, in and of itself, indicate or imply that such medical practice is below an acceptable level of care.

The ultimate judgment regarding the propriety of any specific procedure or course of conduct must be made by the physician and medical physicist in light of all circumstances presented by the individual situation.

CAR practice guidelines are created by experts in the field and solicit member feedback prior to adoption.

If you’re looking for something that isn’t here, we’d love your suggestions! What practice guidelines would you find most beneficial to you in your practice? All suggestions will be presented to, and considered by, the Practice Guidelines Working Group. To forward your feedback, please contact us.
