Meet the Newest CAR Affiliate – Canadian Society of Abdominal Radiology (CSAR)

Did you know the CAR has Affiliate Societies that members can join? The Affiliates are integrated with the CAR and provide the opportunity for close collaboration on education, research, and advocacy activities for the radiology community. The CAR’s newest Affiliate, the Canadian Society of Abdominal Radiology (CSAR), officially launched in November 2020 after the inaugural meeting with the CSAR Executive. As a growing society the CSAR is currently seeking new members. Read More

2021 CRF/CHAR Research Awards

In response to an open call for applications in Fall 2020, the Canadian Radiological Foundation (CRF) and the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology (CHAR) are pleased to award funding to two research projects related to COVID-19:
  1. Using AI to Determine Prevalence of Pre- or Asymptomatic COVID-19 in Patients Undergoing Chest CT for a Non-COVID Indication within Eastern Ontario – A Collaborative Multicenter Observational Study
  2. Using Virtual Reality as a Remote Educational Tool During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Lifelong Member of the CAR Appointed to the Order of Ontario

Dr. Allan Fox Earlier this month Dr. Allan Fox was appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province's highest honour. Dr. Fox is a renowned neuroradiologist who has devoted his career to setting the highest standards for patient care and training in the field. He is a Fellow of the CAR and past recipient of the CAR Gold Medal Award, the Association’s highest honour. He has also undertaken over a decade of humanitarian work in Haifa, Israel. Read More

2020 – A Year in Review and Outlook for 2021

Dr. Mike Barry presents to the Standing Committee on Health via computer Dr. Mike Barry, CAR President, shares highlights from 2020 2020 has been a challenging year for healthcare, particularly for the radiology community. The pandemic not only changed our practices but also added to the extensive waitlists experienced by patients for medical imaging. With many procedures being scaled back by 30-50% at the height of the pandemic, patients are now waiting even longer than before, creating a dire situation for imaging in Canada. CAR members demonstrated leadership during this difficult time and as a result I believe the CAR emerged as one of the leading specialty societies in the pandemic response. Read More

Standing Committee on CPD: A New Chair and Opportunity to Get Involved

Dr. Andrew Chung As a result of the pandemic, the demand for education opportunities and activities has increased significantly. This growing interest in CAR-led continuing professional development (CPD) from the membership and the wider Canadian radiology community has led to a new approach in the development and promotion of CPD opportunities. To steer the CPD Standing Committee in this direction, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Chung to the role of Committee Chair. The CAR’s Virtual Week on Parliament Hill

Virtual meeting with CAR Board Members and MP From November 2-6, the CAR hosted its first Virtual Week on the Hill. For the last several years the CAR has traditionally hosted the Day on the Hill to coincide with the International Day of Radiology (November 8). The purpose of the Day on the Hill is to advocate for the advancement of radiology at the national level and to raise awareness of the important role that radiologists play in the healthcare system.

The evidence is increasingly clear that a diverse physician population that reflects the diversity of the general population can contribute to the provision of high-quality care to patients. There is a paucity of data in Canada in regards to racial diversity in radiology. We do know that women are underrepresented in radiology practices, despite an overrepresentation of women in Canadian medical schools. Women are also underrepresented in academia and leadership within radiology. Read More

Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology and the Canadian Association of Radiologists’ Statement on COVID -19

A normal chest CT scan cannot exclude the diagnosis of COVID-19 especially for patients with recent onset of symptoms.
