Enhancing Patient Care – Considering the Value of Radiology
Financing models for healthcare are evolving, with greater emphasis now being placed on value. How does radiology fit into this equation and how can we be certain that its value is maximized? Representatives from the CAR contributed to a multi-society[1] expert statement published in the CARJ and other journals in December 2020 that outlines the value contributed to healthcare by radiology, and explains how value may be measured, recognized, and augmented. Here we summarize the key points and offer a Canadian perspective on that international publication, Radiology in the Era of Value-Based Healthcare: A Multi-Society Expert Statement From the ACR, CAR, ESR, IS3R, RANZCR, and RSNA.

Radiology with a Dose of Humanitarianism
Life as a Radiologist with the Canadian Armed Forces: Cdr Giang Nguyen, Chief Radiologist
For Commander (Cdr) Giang Nguyen, member of the CAR and British Columbia Radiological Society, working as the Chief Radiologist with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) provides the opportunity to do humanitarian work domestically and internationally. It is not widely known that radiology is a deployable medical specialty. When not deployed on an operation, radiologists with the CAF are embedded within civilian practice, providing care much in the same way as other radiologists within a hospital or community setting.

An Evolution to Results-Based Governance
A high-performing Association hinges on good governance. Over the past few years, the CAR governance structure has shifted from a policy-oriented model toward a results-based framework that places primary responsibility for oversight and accountability with the Board of Directors and the onus for planning and delivering on results with the CEO. In other words, the Board sets direction, monitors, and reports on results that are executed by the CEO and his team. Read More

2020 – A Year in Review and Outlook for 2021
Dr. Mike Barry, CAR President, shares highlights from 2020
2020 has been a challenging year for healthcare, particularly for the radiology community. The pandemic not only changed our practices but also added to the extensive waitlists experienced by patients for medical imaging. With many procedures being scaled back by 30-50% at the height of the pandemic, patients are now waiting even longer than before, creating a dire situation for imaging in Canada. CAR members demonstrated leadership during this difficult time and as a result I believe the CAR emerged as one of the leading specialty societies in the pandemic response.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Canadian Radiology – Featuring Women in Radiology
Meet Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing, CAR member and leader of Canadian Radiology Women
The evidence is increasingly clear that a diverse physician population that reflects the diversity of the general population can contribute to the provision of high-quality care to patients. There is a paucity of data in Canada in regards to racial diversity in radiology. We do know that women are underrepresented in radiology practices, despite an overrepresentation of women in Canadian medical schools. Women are also underrepresented in academia and leadership within radiology. Read More
