Fellowship of the CAR Award
What is the Fellowship of the CAR (FCAR)?
The Fellowship of the Canadian Association of Radiologists (FCAR) is one of the highest honors that the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) can bestow upon its members. This award was created by the FCAR Working Group in 2018 out of a need to recognize the lifelong commitment, by and for CAR members, to a standard of excellence in the profession of radiology.
Recognition as a Fellow of the CAR demonstrates a history of service to the CAR as a volunteer in collaboration and leadership, as well as clinical, scientific and professional accomplishments.
This award is also a guide to inspire early to mid-career members towards a pathway to excellence and professional success in radiology. This award is modelled on other Fellowship programs and reflects the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s CanMEDS framework.

A Message from Dr. Ania Kielar, President of the CAR
Dear Colleagues,
It is an honour to serve the radiology community and to represent the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) on the national stage. I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to learn from my predecessors, Drs. Gilles Soulez, Michael Barry, and Emil Lee during my term on the Board, and I plan to build on their success and accomplishments.
The CAR is working on your behalf on many levels to help our members be more successful in their practices. Advocacy continues to be a top priority for the CAR. While we have had success getting our message out and raising awareness for the importance of medical imaging, there is still more work to be done in terms of addressing the health human resources (HHR) challenges in radiology departments and integrating new technologies, such as e-referrals and AI, to help improve access for patients and enhance workflows.
Engaging with Key Stakeholders
I have had the opportunity to connect with many key stakeholders since assuming the presidency. I was fortunate enough to meet the Federal Minister of Health in Toronto and engage the Minister on the importance of radiology and highlight some of our priorities. I have also connected with provincial radiology societies to discuss our future collaboration in terms of advocacy and the advancement of radiology in Canada. Other opportunities have included meetings with national radiology organizations like the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists and Sonography Canada. Additionally, I have reached out to several members at CAR events to discuss the value of membership and to communicate the CAR’s goals and objectives for the next five years.
Access Over 170 Education Offerings
Education continues to be of the utmost importance. The CAR is focused on providing prime opportunities for our members to collect Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits through our Annual Scientific Meeting and on our online learning management system, RAD Academy. Within this platform, that is free for members, radiologists have access to over 170 offerings ranging from section 1 to section 3 credits, all Royal College accredited. If you are not a regular consumer of RAD Academy, we encourage you to check it out and start earning valuable CPD by emailing [email protected].
Improving Patient Care
Guideline development is what the CAR is best known for. We have developed over 25 practice guidelines in the last 5 years. Thanks to the work of our volunteers and subject matter experts, our clinical practice guidelines have become a trusted source across the country. We are also making significant progress on Clinical Decision Support (CDS). The aim is to package these enhanced referrals electronically and to make them available to referring health practitioners across the country. The goal is to ensure that patients receive the right test at the right time. We are in the middle of our development for Canadian referral guidelines and have established a strong partnership with stakeholders including the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and the Nurse Practitioners Association of Canada. A huge shout out to Drs. Paul Pageau and Ryan Margau for their leadership, and to our volunteers who have spent countless hours drafting these guidelines. Our aspiration is to push for incorporating CDS systems in all jurisdictions within Canada, as reflected in our advocacy work such as our Pre-Budget Submissions and our Days on the Hill.
Innovation in Radiology
Integrating new technologies into radiology continues to be a priority. During our inaugural Radiology Directors Meeting (April 2023), we had the opportunity to connect with radiology directors from across the country. HHR and workflows present a significant challenge. Introducing innovative solutions such as AI and information management will help to address these issues and improve productivity within radiology departments. We are also moving forward with our Radiology Artificial Intelligence Validation Network (RAIVN). RAIVN will focus on post-market review of applications approved by Health Canada. This will ensure AI solutions that are integrated into radiology departments and clinics meet an established standard of functionality.
Raising the Bar on Quality
The CAR has made great strides on the quality of medical imaging in Canada. Not only do we have an extremely successful Mammography Accreditation Program, we have been expanding our accreditation into different modalities. We have a pilot project facilitated by Niagara Health under the leadership of Dr. Ryan Margau. Thus far the outcomes have been positive, and we are hoping to integrate this into other institutions across the country. We are also in the process of creating a National Lung Screening Program, developed in collaboration with the Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology (CSTR), a CAR Affiliate Society, and supported by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC). This program is geared towards general radiologists. There is a significant need across the country to help improve outcomes for Canadians with lung disease through early detection and the CAR is helping to address this need. Phase one and two of the QUEST Lung Cancer Screening has been launched and we expect to offer a case repository by the fall of 2023. In addition, we are also working with CPAC and our breast radiologist network to develop education to help decrease the abnormal call rate for mammography in Canada.
Building Membership Value
Beyond advocacy, guidelines, accreditation, and education, the CAR continues to grow our affinity offerings for members such as preferential packages from STATdx, TD Insurance, and Bell, significantly reducing the cost of your subscriptions.
As your President, I thank you for your support and your engagement with the CAR. This teamwork involving our community, combined with the outstanding work of our staff allows the CAR to progress and be a valuable resource for radiologists in Canada. I would encourage my radiologist colleagues to become involved with the CAR. There are several opportunities to join working groups and standing committees. For more information about these opportunities, reach out to [email protected].
We would like to thank our members for their continued support and recognize the many radiologist leaders who to take time out of their hectic schedules to support initiatives that will have a significant impact on patient care in Canada.
It is due to the support of our members, our Board of Directors, and dedicated CAR staff that we are amplifying the voice for radiology in Canada.

Value of Radiology
NEW CATEGORY: Value of Radiology Project
New this year at the CAR 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting, we invite abstracts related to projects that demonstrate the value of radiology. Through this new category, the Canadian Association of Radiologists and Canadian Radiological Foundation are pleased to recognize research that explores the manner in which radiology adds value to the health care system, improve patient care, and drive cost savings.
On January 26, 2017, the Conference Board of Canada’s Canadian Alliance for Sustainable Health Care released its Value of Radiology in Canada report. The report was the culmination of several months of collaboration with the CAR and our members, who lent their expertise, insight, and evidence to the Conference Board team.
Category Description
In this first year of the Value of Radiology submissions, both qualitative and quantitative projects will be accepted. Overall the focus should be on activities that radiologists undertake in order to add value outside of the traditional radiology report. The projects should be suitable to publicize or publish to a wider audience to demonstrate the value of radiology.
Submissions in this category are informative exhibits designed to review known or emerging facts related specifically to the value of radiology. One of the main goals of this new category is to encourage the radiology community to think more deeply about the services they provide and the level of active positive engagement they have within the healthcare system.
The presentation is to provide a synthesis of information on various topics, relate them in new ways, or extract common threads from diverse data. For example, projects may consider the economic impact of radiology and diagnostic imaging, how radiology adds value by enhancing diagnostic capacity and appropriateness of care and treatments, or how radiology drives health system improvements and delivers optimal patient outcomes.
The projects should advance and enhance the value of radiology in Canada, but may also consider international data and comparisons. Awards for the top three presentations sponsored by CAR/CRF.
Note: this competition is separate and distinct from the Department Clinical Audit Project (DCAP) (please review the CAR Abstract Submission Website for DCAP submission to review the differences between these two competitions.) The DCAP tends to focus on quality improvement within the workplace environment at mostly a departmental level.

Day on the Hill
CAR’s Virtual Day on Parliament Hill -2023
On October 19th the CAR hosted its 8th Annual Day on the Hill. This date was selected to coincide with the CAR Board Meeting in Ottawa. The purpose of the Day on the Hill is to advocate for the advancement of radiology at the national level and to raise awareness of the important role that radiologists play in the healthcare system. This year, the CAR partnered with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and Sonography Canada to develop recommendations to address the medical imaging crisis in Canada.
The day began with a session focusing on AI and the need for national oversight led by Dr. Jaron Chong, Chair, AI Standing Committee. Nik Nanos from Nanos research also presented newly available data from a public opinion poll. This poll indicated that over 72% of Canadians would support the integration of AI into medical imaging provided there was human oversight included in the interpretation of the imaging. The poll also revealed that nine in ten Canadians value the work that radiologists do.
Throughout the day, your CAR board representatives met with MPs, Senators, and senior political staff to discuss our priorities for improving access to high quality medical imaging care for Canadians. CAR board members represented the association with a high degree of professionalism and ease. We were fortunate to have 18 high touchpoint meetings with parliamentarians from across the country including representatives from the Standing Committees on Health and Finance. We effectively communicated the CAR’s top priorities for medical imaging now and in the future.
All four of the CAR’s priorities resonated well and several politicians agreed to bring these items forward to their leaders and/or councils.
Today is our annual Day on the Hill!
We will be meeting with government officials to advocate for the priorities set out in our2024 Pre-Budget submission. 🔗 https://t.co/7G7nK9dS7k

— The Canadian Association of Radiologists (@CARadiologists) October 19, 2023
The CAR’s “asks” for federal government investment focused on the following areas:
People
- Invest in the hiring and retention of MRTs and sonographers as part of a health human resource strategy to reduce backlogs and improve health services. Canada needs an additional 2,000 MRTs and sonographers in the next three years.
Technology
- Take a leadership role in the implementation of Clinical Decision Support systems, to help streamline the imaging referral process and ensure patients receive the right test at the right time.
- Demonstrate leadership in AI through the incorporation of the CAR’s Radiology Artificial Intelligence Validation Network’s (RAIVN) framework to improve the evaluation and regulation of AI in Canada as part of Health Canada’s Medical Devices Directorate regulatory process.
Equipment
- Guide an investment of $2 billion over three years for radiology equipment.
Parliamentarians understood the crisis in health human resources in radiology and the significant impact of excessively long wait times for medical imaging and that Canadians deserve better. Representatives also responded quite positively to the need to develop a strategy for the implementation of new technologies (AI) to augment the services of radiologists. Some of the MPs offered to champion these initiatives and to write letters to the Ministers of Finance and Health with these requests. We were very pleased with the reception and are optimistic in terms of next steps.
