Being a Radiologist-in-Training is a critical early step to a promising career in radiology, one with many questions and uncertainties, which is why the CAR has put together an entire day of trainee-focused education.
Virtual Trainee Day takes place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, and is themed Bones Uncovered: Essential Approaches for MSK Radiology.
“Our resident team hand-picked the speakers this year and we did our best to ensure diverse representation from across Canada,” said Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, CAR Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) Chair.
The Virtual Trainee Day program features expert sessions on various MSK topics, like Approach to Sclerotic Bone Lesions, as well as sessions offering experience-based insights like Things I Wish I Knew in Residency and Fellowship. The day wraps up with the always-popular Junior and Senior Hot Seats.
“The content was developed through a collaborative effort between the RFS, Dr. Karl Narvacan, me, and Dr. Tanya Chawla. We worked together to ensure a broad range of engaging topics for residents at all levels and hope the content will resonate with everyone,” said Dr. MacMillan. “Together, we identified three potential themes: head and neck, emergency, and MSK. After deliberation, MSK was selected as the final theme because we felt it would appeal to both senior and junior radiology residents.”
She believes this year’s sessions will be insightful for all participants, regardless of their residency year.
“MSK is a dynamic and diverse field. It encompasses everything from procedures to diagnostics and offers a variety of practice options. For junior residents, we hope this will be an exciting introduction to the field. For senior residents, we trust that they will walk away with new knowledge and perspectives. Ultimately, we aim to create an engaging experience that enhances the learning journey for everyone.”
As a first-year resident, Dr. MacMillan found Virtual Trainee Day very beneficial.
“I had the opportunity to attend last year, which was focused on body radiology. Our previous Chair, Dr. Hang Yu, did an excellent job hosting the event, and the speakers were very informative. I found the program incredibly valuable and really enjoyed the Hot Seat sessions, which provided a unique and interactive learning opportunity.”
