It is the CAR’s pleasure to congratulate Dr. Scott Gregoire on becoming the new President of the Manitoba Association of Radiologists (MAR).
Dr. Gregoire is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba (U of M)’s Max Rady College of Medicine in the Department of Radiology in Winnipeg, the same university where he earned his undergraduate degree. Dr. Gregoire completed his residency at the University of Alberta (U of A) and received fellowship training at the University of California San Diego (UCSD).
Earlier this year, Dr. Gregoire rebooted the Manitoba Association of Radiologists (MAR), which was running but not reaching its full potential in the province or with Doctors Manitoba.
A special thanks to Dr Debbie Mabin who represented the MAR so well for many years.
With some senior support from former CAR President Dr. Ted Lyons and former CAR board member, Dr. Dan Lindsay, the first large group meeting was set for May 9th.
There was a record turnout on a warm Thursday night in Winnipeg.
The Alberta Society of Radiologists (ASR) was a featured presenter, and CEO Amanda Davison provided an overview of the depth and breadth of the services that they provide. Dr. Bill Anderson from the ASR, and former CAR board member, talked about the need to for consistency and persistence that is backed by solid policy to be successful. The CAR’s CEO Nick Neuheimer presented the CAR’s value of radiology policy papers along with the value of independent research and national guidelines that support the practice of quality radiology.
Outside of his work as the MAR President and at the U of M, Dr. Gregoire has personal commitments in the Winnipeg sport community.
“Hockey is what I grew up playing. I have moved into coaching and have coached for 10 seasons. F1 racing and competitive karting are a close second favourite, and I am currently managing my son’s racing team.”
In his experience, Manitoba shares many great qualities with the rest of Canada.
“Having travelled and lived in several parts of Canada, I think there is more that unites us than divides us,” he said. “The quality of training and commitment to patients seem to be universal themes in Canadian medicine. However, the cottage country life during a Manitoba summer is a nice perk of living here.”
Looking back on his training, he points to several influential leaders who provided indelible guidance along the way.
“I have had the privilege of training at several institutions and have had wonderful mentors, especially in MSK radiology. Some of the mentors that stick out are Dr. Edward Wiebe and Dr Sean Crowther at the University of Alberta, Dr. Donald Resnick at UCSD, and Dr. Paul Major and Dr. Gerhard Bock at the University of Manitoba,” he recalled.
Dr. Gregoire says he and the MAR have received constructive organizational mentorship as well.
“The CAR has been indispensable in providing guidance and resources to the MAR to help us grow and be a strong Manitoba voice; things like helping with strategic leadership, attending and presenting at our recent meeting, helping with by-laws and organizational structure, and building connections with other organizations. In addition, the ASR has been an invaluable resource, especially Amanda Davison and Dr. Bill Anderson.”
As Dr. Gregoire takes his leadership role, he has several stated goals for the organization.
“We need to work better with Doctors Manitoba to represent the radiologists and patients of Manitoba. We need to increase collegiality and collaboration between Manitoba radiologists, other physicians, and the other provincial radiology societies. And finally, we need to be a part of the quality and education process.”
Dr. Gregoire aims to work on these goals over the next few years, while adding members to the MAR and attracting radiologists to the province.
“I’m hoping that we can facilitate better recruitment and retention of radiologist in Manitoba. I would also like to grow the MAR membership and hire an executive director to help guide the organization.”
One of the key connections for the MAR is with Doctors Manitoba, which Dr. Gregoire says has grown stronger as the two organizations find common ground.
“Issues such as breast screening, women’s health, and recruitment/retention of radiologists are a few examples where we have shared goals. In fact, we are hoping to plan an event focused on women's health and breast screening later this fall, working in conjunction with the CAR.”
Congratulations once again to MAR President Dr. Scott Gregoire. The CAR looks forward to its continued relationship and supports the MAR’s work on behalf of patients and radiologists in Manitoba.
