Sustainability in radiology has been a consistent priority for the CAR and the work of our members. This is directly aligned with the priorities of the international radiology community, as evidenced by the theme and key talks at ECR 2025: Planet Radiology.
CAR President Dr. Ania Kielar, Vice-President Dr. Alison Harris, Board Director Dr. Bruno Morin, and CEO Nick Neuheimer attended the international scientific meeting from February 26 – March 2 in Vienna, Austria.
“ECR 2025 was an excellent event with something for everyone. Though I had many CAR duties, I really enjoyed an engaging review of chest x-rays and a cutting-edge talk about liver directed therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma,” recalled Dr. Kielar. “The plenary session on climate change was an incredible production with very poignant messaging. The effort to recycle and reduce the carbon footprint at the meeting was visible throughout the building and in the organizational plans.”
She noted the presentations that focused on sustainability were consistently well-engaged.
“There was incredible turnout for the radiology sustainability talks, including ones which highlighted the work of CAR member and co-chair of the CAR Sustainability Working Group, Dr. Kate Hanneman,” she commended. “A highlight I took to heart was the importance of each department making concerted changes and using their role to positively influence industry to create environmentally and financially sustainable solutions. We all have a role to play, locally and on the world stage.”
The shared responsibility of sustainability in radiology was purposefully addressed at ECR 2025.

“There was a special forum of all radiology society presidents to present their societies' short and long-term plans for sustainability. Every radiology organization is driven by evidence and understands that we all must participate to combat climate change. The importance of international groups working together towards the common goal of providing high-quality care in a sustainable way was highlighted many times,” said Dr. Kielar.
Our stewardship of the environment is particularly important as Canadians, with a vast territory over diverse landscapes, she pointed out.
“The work done by the CAR Sustainability Working Group and the involvement of Canadian radiologists in leadership and collaborative roles at the international stage is inspiring and something we should continue to support and grow.”
