Educational Exhibit Category Winner Receives Publication Honour

September 27, 2024

A winning project at CAR 2024 is receiving added recognition from Canada’s leading radiology journal.

Pediatric Neurosonography: A Comprehensive Review and Systematic Approach won first place at CAR 2024’s Abstract Competition in the Educational Exhibits category. This paper was also selected to receive the prestigious honour of being published in the Canadian Association of Radiology Journal (CARJ).

“This recognition validates the importance of ultrasound in pediatric neurological disorders and motivates me to continue contributing to this field,” said lead author Dr. Neetika Gupta.

She authored the paper in collaboration with Dr. Shivaprakash B. Hiremath, Dr. Isabelle Gauthier, Dr. Nagwa Wilson, and Canadian Society of Pediatric Radiology (CanSPR) President Dr. Elka Miller. She says that putting together the abstract and submitting it to CAR 2024 was a challenging and enriching experience.

“Understanding the nuances of neurosonography and its applications in pediatric patients required extensive reading and literature review. The submission process was easy. The CAR team provided excellent support and feedback, making the process smooth and educational.”

The focus of the winning project was how ultrasound helps evaluate the pediatric brain in NICU settings.

“More specifically,” noted Dr. Gupta, “we examined this evaluation in areas like cranial sutures, intracranial Doppler in sickle cell disease, and the infant’s spine.  Our work highlights neurosonography as an effective, non-invasive, and non-radiation imaging modality for identifying pathological conditions in the pediatric head and spine, helping differentiate them from normal variations.”

The project involved reviewing cases where patients had undergone neuro ultrasounds for various neurological conditions over the past five years. The authors conducted an extensive case-based review to understand the neurological condition’s final diagnosis and clinical outcome.

Dr. Gupta says the findings of this project have the potential for long-term impacts on pediatric patients.

“The research we conducted could lead to better use of neurosonography in pediatric care, helping with early diagnosis and guiding treatment. Additionally, our findings aim to encourage the widespread adoption of neurosonography in the routine evaluation of neonatal patients, including its use in tertiary care, pediatric, and non-specialized centres that perform pediatric and neonatal ultrasounds. This broader implementation could enhance early diagnosis and treatment across diverse healthcare settings.”

Congratulations to Dr. Gupta and the entire team behind this amazing work.

Don’t miss this opportunity to make your mark on the future of radiology and submit your abstract for CAR 2025!

Submission deadline is November 26, 2024, 11:59 pm EST.
