Dr. Simon Bicknell takes the helm at the British Columbia Radiological Society

February 26, 2020

The British Columbia Radiological Society (BCRS) is pleased to announce that Dr. Simon Bicknell has assumed the role of President until Dec 2021. He has been at Coastal Community of Care since 2002, centrally involved at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH) and North Shore Medical Imaging (outpatient community clinic) in North Vancouver while also travelling to Sechelt and Squamish/Whistler for provision of onsite radiology services. Dr. Bicknell completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Victoria, and medical school as well as radiology residency at the University of British Columbia. He was able to obtain additional subspecialized training in cardiac/echo and intervention during the residency program but today is most happy as a generalist interpreting all modalities.

“I am honoured to take over this role from Dr. Alison Harris who lead the organization over the past two years. Economic, quality and governance issues will be forefront in the future.  We look forward to working with our colleagues and partners in achieving our goals, and to ensure the BC population has timely access to the highest quality radiology services.”

– Dr. Simon Bicknell

Dr. Bicknell had the opportunity to be head of the LGH group for eight years and was the medical lead of Vancouver Coastal Health Ultrasound for a decade. He also participated on subcommittees for Obstetrical Ultrasound Standards/NT Prenatal Screening as well as the Guidelines and Protocols Advisory Committee assisting in developing guidelines. He has always enjoyed teaching and developing assessment standards and recently finished a 10-year term with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as an Examiner and on the Comprehensive Exam Executive Committee.

Dr. Bicknell has been a member of the BCRS board since September 2018, serving as a Member at Large and President-Elect but has taken on several projects in the past when asked by the Executive.

Dr. Bicknell is married and has four children, of ages 19, 17, 15, 13. The second-oldest child is attending McGill University and the secondo-oldest will be attending Stanford University soon. All his children enjoy competitive squash and the entire family spends time outdoors hiking and skiing. In the summer, he is an avid rock climber and spends his evenings with a good book.

Dr. Bicknell will connect with the CAR on governance and looks forward to working with the CAR as AI becomes more prevalent in radiology.

The BCRS is a non-profit society whose radiologist members actively pursue the society’s mission: “To provide the highest quality of diagnostic imaging for the residents of British Columbia through the provision of world-class radiological care and services.” For additional information, visit the BCRS website – bcradiology.ca.
