The CAR recently developed a contrast agent infographic to inform patients, families, and the public about types of contrast, common uses, and the patient experience with medical imaging that uses contrast. The infographic can be displayed by radiologists in their facilities across Canada and promoted online. It is a patient-facing document that addresses common patient concerns. This project was championed by CAR members Drs. Marco Essig (University of Manitoba) and Nick Schieda (University of Ottawa).
Multiple CAR clinical practice guidelines cover the use of Gadolinium-based contrast agents. The CAR has consistently provided Canadian radiologists with the information and evidence-based recommendations that they need to make informed decisions to ensure patient safety and high-quality patient care. These guidelines are among the most frequently cited articles in the CARJ and downloaded articles from the CAR website. In light of the Canadian radiology community’s interest in content related to contrast agents, the CAR developed the patient roadmap and associated infographics in order to facilitate knowledge translation of the clinical practice guidelines via patient-facing resources.
There are four sections in the infographic:
- What is contrast and why is it used?
- What else do I need to know?
- Common Types of Contrast and Their Use
- Patient Journey
The patient journey section describes the possible pathways a patient can follow when contrast agent is recommended for a medical imaging procedure. It highlights the responsibilities of various members of the healthcare team, while emphasizing the role of the radiologist.
