Advocating for Additional Resources to Help Manage Medical Imaging Backlogs: How to Get Involved Today

September 3, 2021

Earlier this August we sent out a survey to our members to measure how the pandemic has impacted radiologists’ practices and their ability to provide access to quality imaging care. The survey results indicated that the community across Canada continues to find closing the COVID related backlog challenging. Wait lists for MRI and CT are not going away, instead they are getting worse. With almost 30% of respondents indicating they are operating between 50-80% capacity, it is evident that additional support is required to help care for Canadians.

Your Feedback

Included below is a summary of the survey results. Many radiology departments have had to increase staffing and extend clinic hours. This is causing stress and even burnout especially during this trying time. Health human resources was identified as the greatest hurdle in reducing wait times, however, more equipment is also required. Referrals have increased and many people believe that things will never return to pre-pandemic levels. Things must change if we are going to be able to provide timely care for our patients.

If this resonates, we want to hear from you. You can provide your input by participating in the survey below.

Get Involved

The CAR supports the radiology community and continues to advocate for an increased investment in medical imaging equipment, health human resources and the implementation of innovative imaging solutions to help radiologists in their practice. The CAR has asked the federal government to invest $1.5 billion over five years in these priorities. Further details regarding our asks can be found in our 2022 Pre-Budget Submission. We believe that we have made progress over the last few years and are hopeful that this will result in action. Healthcare is a central priority to the Federal Election and party leaders have indicated their stance in this area. We can use your support. As radiologists practicing in various regions, you have an opportunity to join the cause by engaging in grassroots advocacy.

Join POP

We have implemented a Parliamentary Outreach Program, which CAR members can join. We encourage you to sign up for this program. Once you join, we will connect with you and provide access to resources to help you make an impact in your community and tools to reach out to your MP. All these resources and more can be found on the CAR website.

It is Time to Act

Now is the time to act. Collectively we have the power to initiate change and to garner support among our various political representatives. This is a national issue that spans across Canada and impacts everyone. Ensuring equitable access to quality imaging care for Canadians is paramount to the CAR. Equally important is to provide our members with the resources they need to help minimize wait times and deliver superior patient care. Included below, we have summarized the various parties’ platforms. This will help you become familiar with the issues and priorities of each ideology.

We are here to support each other as clinicians, and I plan to do my part to best represent radiologists nationally leading up to the election and throughout the coming year.
