October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada, a time to raise awareness for the disease and connect with those who have been impacted by breast cancer. This month, the CAR will highlight the importance of breast health and the impact of screening on patients across the country.
Coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the CAR is pleased to bring you the second episode of Radiology Roundtable, the CAR Journal’s (CARJ) new podcast, Misinformation and Breast Screening on Tuesday, October 10. Breast imaging experts Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing and Dr. Jean Seely will discuss breast screening in Canada, practical aspects of expanding breast imaging programs, their approaches to counselling woman between 40-70, and more. By listening to the podcast and reading the associated article, you are eligible for Section 2 MOC credit.
RAD Academy, the CAR’s learning management system, will also highlight new content focused on breast imaging, providing members with another opportunity to earn valuable MOC credits. Explore the series Current Topics in Breast Imaging and the Importance of IV Contrast, from CAR 2023:
- The Risks and Consequences of Breast Tissue Density – Dr. Paula Gordon
- A woman’s breast density is an important piece of health information and should be shared directly with her, as well as her physician/primary care provider in every mammogram report. There are two significant risks of having dense breasts:
- Cancer may be masked in normal dense tissue on a mammogram. This leads to an increased risk of an interval cancer.
- Women with dense breasts are at increased risk of developing breast cancer.
- A woman’s breast density is an important piece of health information and should be shared directly with her, as well as her physician/primary care provider in every mammogram report. There are two significant risks of having dense breasts:
- Fundamentals of Preoperative Breast MRI – Dr. Mary Beth Bissell
- Examine this review of the current literature supporting the use of preoperative breast MRI. Dr. Bissell covers basic principles of performing and interpreting these examinations and uses cases to highlight key principles in staging including focality and extent of disease, contralateral findings, and axillary lymph node assessment.
- Contrast Enhanced Mammography: The BC Cancer Vancouver Experience – Dr. Zina Kellow, Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing
- Delve into this case-based session where our speakers provide an overview of contrast-enhanced mammography at BC Cancer Vancouver. The session narrows in on the rationale, the initial steps, the barriers as well as its success.
- Abbreviated Breast MRI: State of the Field – plenary session from Dr. Yiming Gao
- Future directions in breast MRI aim not only to improve accuracy of breast cancer detection, but also to reduce barriers for wider adoption. Abbreviated breast MRI is an emerging technique rapidly gaining acceptance as a supplemental screening tool. In this session, we audit data on current ABMR adoption, application, and outcomes, consider challenges in clinical implementation and auditing, and share clinical experience in using ultrafast imaging in a hybrid abbreviated protocol.
Insights4Imaging, the CARJ’s journal-based self-assessment program, includes an interactive activity which examines the efficacy of different mammography screening frequency protocols across Canada. Check out this activity and several others that expire at the end of the month. Each activity is eligible for Section 3 SAP MOC credit.
- Breast Density and Risk of Interval Cancers: The Effect of Annual Versus Biennial Screening Mammography Policies in Canada
- Protocols for breast cancer screening vary by province across Canada, with each province outlining the criteria for mammography and the intervals between screenings. This paper and accompanying activity focus on the critical relationship between breast density and risk of interval cancers and compare incidence of interval cancer in provinces where mammography is performed biennially to provinces that recall women with dense breasts annually.
