The CAR board of directors met in Ottawa from Sept. 27 – 29 to discuss the value of radiology and the CAR’s advocacy efforts. The discussions between the board and government leaders were fruitful and are paving the way for future decisions.
Canadian awareness of radiologists is at a new high. A study by Nanos Research states that 86% of Canadians said they were familiar with radiologists and what they do. There’s overwhelming support for investments in medical imaging equipment and for the government to take a leadership role in artificial intelligence. This great news demonstrates Canadian support and interest in innovation, which, in turn, results in better patient care.
The following are highlights from the meetings:
- Radiologists continue to take a leadership role in AI. This helps define the profession in a positive light, and even frames the entire field of research as cutting-edge and modern. But more importantly, these initiatives allow for improved patient care and extend the reach of radiologists.
- The CAR continues to increase the visibility of radiology by maintaining and committing to new initiatives for advocacy. In the past months, we met with government officials and representatives and have become a household name in healthcare. The pre-budget submission was a large focus of many meetings since it will improve healthcare for patients across the country. On the upcoming Day on the Hill (November 5th & 6th) the conversations with MPs continue, with the intention to get additional support for better patient access and radiological innovation.
- The CAR will continue our Value of Radiology initiative by working on a second report with the Conference Board of Canada. The focus will be on wait times and diagnostic imaging equipment for 2028.
- Before the board meeting, the CAR had a productive meeting with provincial radiology leaders. The topic of discussion was the future of radiology in Canada and how communications across the country can improve to offer better care for Canadians.
- The board of directors appointed a new editor-in-chief for the CARJ. We welcome and congratulate, Dr. Mehran Midia, who starts this role January 1st, 2019.
The CAR is well positioned to achieve our strategic goals. I am humbled to be your national representative and truly in awe of all of our volunteers and staff who have worked so hard in moving the association forward. We can expect great things for 2019 and the future of radiology in Canada – Dr. Emil Lee
