Woman trainees and radiologists from across Canada are now better equipped to take on the challenges of leading in the field of radiology, thanks to an innovative workshop hosted by the University of Dalhousie.
The Dalhousie Physician Leadership Workshop for Women in Radiology took place virtually on Saturday, February 1, hosted by the university’s Department of Diagnostic Radiology and the Canadian Radiology Women, with financial support from the Canadian Radiological Foundation.
Dr. Daria Manos, CAR member and Past-President of the Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology (CSTR), served as the event’s Steering Committee Chair. She says attendance nearly surpassed the triple digit mark.
“During the five-hour event, we had several didactic lectures from prominent woman radiologists and a few breakout sessions that focused on specific topics. In fact, it was the first year we had a breakout session specifically for radiologists in Quebec and one for women in interventional radiology. Both were very well attended,” she pointed out.
The workshop helps women radiologists and trainees challenge the tendency to underestimate their leadership abilities and to explicitly address internal and external barriers to leadership that are unique to women. The didactic lectures touched on identifying mentors, balancing family life with career demands, and understanding the foundational concepts of negotiation in radiology. The breakout sessions were tailored to specific topics and objectives like making the transition from academia to practice, building relationship capital, understanding institutional betrayal, practicing radiology in Quebec, and more.
Overall, Dr. Manos was pleased with the success of the event, from attendance and participation to content and speakers, as were many of the attendees.
“The Dalhousie Leadership Workshop for Women in Radiology doesn’t just benefit attendees,” remarked one participant on their anonymous, post-event evaluation, “it strengthens the institutions they lead, the trainees they mentor, and the patients they serve."
