Radiologists are diligent about developing the clinical and technical skills for their profession, but they may not always devote the same effort towards cultivating “soft skills” such as good patient communication or effective industry advocacy. In the era of rapidly evolving technology, new challenges and opportunities constantly appear. The importance of non-interpretive skills in radiology is increasingly critical.
The CAR is developing an eight-part series, entitled Inside the C-Suite, based on the foundation and fundamentals of the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework: Communicator, Collaborator, Leader, Health Advocate, Professional and Scholar.
The first webinar of this series entitled Mastering the Art of Radiology Negotiations takes place on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:30pm ET. The webinar falls under the category of Leader, and features expert speakers Dr. Frank Lexa, Dr. Darren Ferguson, and Dr. Christine Molnar.
Dr. Molnar says that acquiring negotiation skills is important for radiologists to advocate for themselves and the profession.
“Negotiation is all about change. We need to influence that change for the betterment of patient care and the healthcare system. Radiologists are the physicians best placed to advocate for the imaging tools and appropriate access that patients need in so many diagnostic and therapeutic care settings. With a solid foundation based on our specialty specific knowledge, we can influence positive change that supports patients getting the imaging or intervention they need.”
She says there are some simple ways of gaining experience in negotiating.
“Get involved in existing groups, teams, or organizations that are striving for quality change. Actively listen, learn and read. Practice, practice, practice. I found the most powerful motivator supporting the inner drive to learn and grow in my professional career was the need to make a difference in healthcare for patients. Understanding how to communicate and influence change leads to negotiating for that change.”
This 60-minute session will discuss and examine the principles of negotiations from experts in the field. Participants will gain knowledge and skills from the negotiation experiences of radiology leaders and gain a better understanding of negotiations, including how to apply the principles in their daily lives.
