International Day of Radiology

International Day of Radiology – Breast Imaging

CAR to mark the occasion with Day on the Hill

November 8th is the International Day of Radiology (IDoR). This year, the occasion will be dedicated to breast imaging and the crucial role that radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis, and management of diseases of the breast. As a precursor to this, the CAR will be on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on November 3rd to help raise awareness of the value of breast screening as well the critical role that radiologists play in health care in Canada.

The occasion will serve as a platform to strengthen the recommendations brought forward by the CAR at the Standing Committee on Finance, hearing held on September 29th. At that meeting, CAR President Dr. Willie Miller stated the need for investment in: diagnostic imaging equipment, clinical decision support (CDS), and maintaining incentives for group medical practices.

The CAR will be represented by radiologists from across the country: Drs. Mackenzie Budimir-Hussey, Carole Dennie, Bruce Forster, Emil Lee, Matt McInnes, Willie Miller, and Jean Seely. In addition to meeting with MPs whose work is more closely linked with health care to discuss issues affecting the profession of radiology, as outlined in the CAR’s pre-budget submission.

The CAR will also be holding a simulated breast screening session, run by Dr. Seely, head of breast imaging in the Department of Medical Imaging at the Ottawa Hospital and member of the CAR breast imaging working group. This will be a great opportunity for parliamentarians to get a first-hand account of the advances made to breast imaging and how innovative technology can help to improve patient outcomes through appropriate imaging.

The CAR has been a proud supporter of IDoR since its inception in 2012. For more information on this initiative, visit or visit the IDoR Facebook page for all the latest news. You can also download electronic banners and posters to help celebrate the day at your own institution or centre. If you’re planning an event for IDoR, we’d love to hear about it.

History of IDoR

An initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR), this annual event aims to increase public awareness of the value that radiology contributes to patient care and seeks to improve understanding of the vital role that radiologists play as an integral part of the healthcare team. November 8 was chosen to mark this day of action and awareness in commemoration of the discovery of x-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen on November 8, 1895.

IDoR is a wonderful occasion to honour the achievements of our medical specialty while publicizing the essential function of the radiologist in the provision of safe and high-quality care. The CAR will be joining more than 130 medical societies around the world in promoting and celebrating this very special day and invited members to take part as well.

IDoR developed a range of resources – including a customizable news release, print and web advertisements, etc. – which could be used to help spread the word about the event. Click here to access this online communications toolkit.

The CAR is also happy to make the following IDoR publications available directly to its members:
