Summer Presidential Address – Dr. Alison Harris

I am happily embracing the first few months of my role as President, taking over from Dr. Ania Kielar in April at CAR 2025. I would like to provide a summer update with our latest initiatives and plans for the rest of the year.

Advocating for Radiologists and Canadian Patients

The fall season brings with it a new Sitting Session for the House of Commons, our advocacy priorities take on a renewed focus. A handful of CAR delegates will once again meet with key decision makers during the Day on the Hill on October 20 and 21 to stress the critical challenges facing medical imaging in Canada, like long wait times and aging equipment, and the subsequent impact on patient care.

Stay tuned to the Weekly Scan for more event details and follow our social media channels for updates throughout.

Expert-Led CPD Events

There will be plenty of engaging opportunities to earn your Continuing Profession Development (CPD) credits over the next several months. The CAR is proud to host several expert-led webinars and workshops that cover a variety of specialty areas, thanks in large part to the dedication of CAR members in Working Groups and the Affiliate Societies.

Guideline Development and the CAR Journal (CARJ)

A prime feature of CAR membership is access to the high-quality research and guidelines published in the CARJ. There have already been several outstanding clinical practice guidelines published this year, most recently the Recommendations for the Management of Incidentally Detected Gallbladder Polyps: Update of the 2020 Canadian Association of Radiologists Recommendations for the Management of Incidental Hepatobiliary Findings in Adults.

There are several guidelines currently in development for Fall 2025:

  • Diagnosis of Fibrotic ILD
  • Fast MRI Sequences for Pediatric Populations
  • Knee MRI
  • Guidance on MASLD

In addition to developing high-quality and relevant practice guidelines, we can see the importance of the CARJ is steadily increasing with its latest Impact Factor. In June, the CARJ proudly announced an Impact Factor of 3.7 – a significant jump from 2.9 the year previous. This achievement is made possible by the tireless effort of the reviewers and editors who take the time to ensure each article meets their rigorous standards. Congratulations to Editor-in-Chief Dr. Michael Patlas and the CARJ staff on this outstanding accomplishment.

For now, I hope our members can find time to get away from work and recharge while the summer warmth is still here. I would like to thank our members and volunteers for their continued support and recognize the many radiologist leaders who dedicate their time to support and lead initiatives that will benefit patient care in Canada.
