CAR Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

The CAR Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group is thrilled to announce the release of a new EDI Toolkit document and share its recently published CAR Journal article, which specifically addresses equality in the residency selection process.

Recommendations for Improvement of EDI in the CaRMS Selection Process Expand

The CAR Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group is thrilled to share its recently published CaRMs article, led by Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing, which specifically addresses equality in the residency selection process. We extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers who contributed their time and unwavering commitment to this important work.

This article provides recommendations for improving equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the Canadian residency selection process, specifically in the context of CaRMs. It highlights the need for addressing the underrepresentation of gender and ethnic diversity in the field of radiology and proposes a timeline for selection committees to review and incorporate these recommendations. The recommendations include implicit bias training, standardizing application metrics and interviews, utilizing situational judgment tests, standardizing the virtual interview environment, diversifying the selection committee, and using self-identifying diversity data. These recommendations aim to promote a fair and inclusive selection process.

EDI Toolkit Expand

The CAR Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group is excited to announce the release of a new EDI toolkit document. This accomplishment is the result of collaborative efforts led by Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing and the dedicated members of the EDI Working Group. Sincere gratitude is extended to the volunteers who contributed their time and unwavering dedication to this significant endeavour.

This toolkit presents a comprehensive plan to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within Radiology in Canada. It offers clear and detailed explanations of key EDI concepts, creating a solid foundation for initiating and maintaining EDI efforts. The toolkit also outlines a practical approach for establishing EDI committees within radiology departments, emphasizing their crucial role in guiding and advancing EDI strategies.

Furthermore, the toolkit explores innovative methods tailored to promote diversity in the radiology workforce. This includes creating inclusive job announcements, using unbiased candidate search techniques, conducting fair evaluations of applications, and forming diverse recruitment committees.

By embracing the recommended strategies and principles outlined in this toolkit, radiologists can foster an environment that promotes EDI, ultimately leading to improved patient care.

Physician Parental Leave Across Canada

Parental leave policies in Canada are generally governed by federal and provincial/territorial laws. Doctors in Canada are entitled to parental leave similar to other employees.

Federal Parental Leave:

The federal government in Canada provides parental leave benefits through the Employment Insurance (EI) program. Doctors, like other eligible employees, can apply for EI benefits during their parental leave.

Provincial and Territorial Variations:

In addition to federal parental leave benefits, provinces and territories in Canada may have their own labor laws and regulations that affect parental leave policies. These can vary, and doctors need to consider both federal and provincial/territorial rules. Some provinces and territories may provide additional benefits or specific provisions for certain industries or professions.
