Dr. Michael Barry joined the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) Board over 10 years ago (2020-2022).
He occupied various roles, including Secretary and Treasurer, followed by Vice-President, President and Past President.
During his tenure, specifically in the Presidential role, he made a significant impact on the radiology community. This was an especially challenging time with the pandemic and the need to adapt and be resilient as an organization.
“COVID-19 fundamentally changed the practice of medicine. It also impacted the education of trainees and patients, said Dr. Barry.” Under his leadership the CAR demonstrated strength as the radiology community rallied together. The CAR was able to convene radiologists to work collaboratively with the CAR during a time where there was tremendous uncertainty. “We strengthened our advocacy efforts with government and healthcare partners, expanded our education through virtual learning and worked consistently on practice guidelines. These achievements were only possible because of the remarkable dedication of so many of our members across the country,” said Dr. Barry.
When asked how radiology has changed since his Presidency, Dr. Barry stated that “Radiology has changed more in the last five years than in the previous twenty. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved from theory into clinical practice. While AI will not replace radiologists, it will fundamentally change how we work by improving workflow, assisting with interpretation, enhancing quality and allowing us to focus more attention on complex clinical decision making and patient care.”
Dr. Barry further indicated that Canada continues to face significant challenges with access to imaging, aging equipment, workforce shortages, and increased demand. He stated that “these issues reinforce the importance of a strong national organization like the CAR to advocate for patients and our profession.”
When asked what advice he would give to emerging radiologists, Dr. Barry said “Never stop learning. Radiology has always been a speciality driven by innovation and today’s change of pace is extraordinary. Stay curious, embrace new technologies and view these innovations as powerful tools that will help you provide better care, rather than something to be feared. Equally important is to become involved in your community. Whether through the CAR, your provincial society, teaching, research or leadership, our profession depends on people who are willing to step up and contribute. Some of the most rewarding experiences of my career have come through radiology, outside of the reading room. Finally, remember that radiology is ultimately about patients. Behind every examination is a person depending on us to provide accurate, timely and compassionate care.”
Dr. Barry remains optimistic about the future of radiology. What continues to inspire him are the people. “Throughout my career and especially during my time with the CAR, I have been fortunate to work alongside talented colleagues from across the country. The friendships, collaborations and shared commitment to excellence have been among the greatest rewards of my professional life. As I look ahead, I remain grateful for the opportunities that I have had and excited to continue to contribute to our speciality in whatever way I can.”
Dr. Barry enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife Susan, his four children and eight grandchildren. He and his wife are now focused on building their forever home in Rothsay, New Brunswick.
