With a groundbreaking new initiative, the CAR is recognizing the value of strong leadership and its influence on the professional advancement of its members.
The CAR Radiology Leadership Program will officially launch with the Kick-Off Meeting on Thursday, April 16 in Montreal.
“With the ever-changing landscape in radiology and the many leadership opportunities available across Canada, we wanted to create a program to support our members and provide the essential skills needed to undertake these roles,” said Dr. Alison Harris, CAR President.

“There are so many leadership opportunities in our specialty and having radiologists in these positions is important for the growth and well-being of radiology,” added Dr. Ania Kielar, Chair of the CAR Radiology Leadership Program Working Group. “However, many radiologists don’t feel they have the skills to take on these roles. This course is designed to provide the tools needed to get involved in leadership and to create a culture of support and comradery.”
The program is set up in several stages. The Kick-Off Meeting is the first part component where registered participants will officially begin the program. This in-person event features didactive lectures, interactive group work, a panel discussion, networking opportunities, and a leadership dinner.
The second part of the program consists of three dynamic eCourses. Each eCourse is divided into four sections featuring a faculty-led webinar, followed by independent course work and assignments, and concluding with a facilitated discussion led by the leadership faculty on the ecourse theme. The first eCourse, Foundations of Leadership, begins in May, followed by the second eCourse, Strategic Conversations, in September, finishing with the third eCourse, Decision Making & Problem Solving, in November. Each eCourse consists of:
- A one-hour live webinar with a faculty member
- One hour of self-directed learning with reading and video content
- A one-hour case scenario assignment
- One hour of live facilitated discussion
The third, and final component of the program is an optional Quality Improvement project. This part is designed for participants who wish to apply the knowledge they have gained to a real-world project, further supporting their personal and professional growth, with leadership faculty available to provide mentorship throughout.
“All types of radiologists are welcome and would benefit from this,” said Dr. Frank Lexa, an Expert Contributor to the program. “This program is designed to be accessible for those who are at the beginning of their leadership journey but will also provide valuable lessons to those with some leadership experience.”
Dr. Geraldine McGinty, also an Expert Contributor to the program, says there are several key concepts that attendees will learn.
“The first is that leadership is for everyone, and you can start right where you are in your career. Radiologists also need to be at the table when decisions are being made. This program will help with intentional preparation for leadership challenges, especially for difficult or strategic conversations.”
Dr. McGinty believes that imaging is a critical part of advancing healthcare and radiologists should be at the forefront of deciding how it is implemented and funded.
“We’d like our participants to feel that they have leveled up their ability to influence the Canadian system of radiology, from government advocacy to the individual patient experience.”

CPD Courses and On-Demand

CAR CPD is excited to launch the Lung Cancer Screening Library on Tuesday, February 3rd!
This interactive library offers participants the opportunity to interpret lung screening cases to help them meet accreditation standards and lung screening program minimum CT volume requirements. This case repository is intended as a resource for radiologists to practice the interpretation and diagnosis of images for lung cancer screening, using the ACR’s Lung-RADS v2022 result categories.
