The CAR Annual Scientific Meeting offers a great opportunity to share your latest research and gain insights from leading radiologists and peers. Submit an abstract and share your work on a national stage, sharpen your communication and presentation skills, and gain valuable feedback and recognition.
Dr. Cindy Qian was lead author for the winning project in last year’s Quality Improvement Project category.
“Winning the QI presentation award highlights the strong support from that I received from my supervisor, Dr. Ryan Hung, as well as the excellent QI program at the University of Alberta, spearheaded by Dr. Suki Dhillon. I think it reflects our strong culture of continuous improvement and self-evaluation.”
Dr. Jerald Lim was lead author on the project that placed second in the Scientific Research Project category. He says it means a great deal for his research group.
“The award reflects the time, teamwork, and support behind this project. Our work benefited from multidisciplinary collaboration among radiologists, cardiologists, and research colleagues who brought different clinical, imaging, and scientific perspectives. This recognition belongs to the entire team. As an international fellow continuing my training and building an academic career in Canada, receiving this award feels especially meaningful.”
For Dr. Qian, the experience helped her learn to present her team’s work in a way that is accessible to a more general audience including medical students and radiologists from other subspecialties.
“The experience reinforced the importance of not only doing good work but also being able to communicate its significance clearly and effectively.”
Dr. Lim says the process taught him how to turn a detailed research project into a clear and focused story.
“Preparing the abstract required us to define our main message. Presenting helped me explain our methods simply, anticipate questions, and communicate why the findings matter.”
Both Dr. Qian and Dr. Lim looked back on their experience and have advice for those considering entering their research in the competition at CAR 2027.
“Although it can be daunting, the process of formulating a project idea, completing the project, creating a presentation, and presenting it has been invaluable,” urged Dr. Qian. “The Annual Scientific Meeting is an excellent conference with lots of opportunities for learning and networking. I would encourage trainees to embrace the opportunity and not be afraid to put themselves out there.”
“Focus on one or two main messages and explain their relevance early,” Dr. Lim advised. “Know your methods and limitations well but resist the urge to fit the entire manuscript onto your slides. Nobody in the back row has ever asked for a smaller font! Seek feedback from your team and acknowledge your collaborators. A strong presentation reflects the work of everyone involved.”
