CAR Education – 2022 Recap

December 20, 2022

The CAR’s education department, in tandem with its collaborating partners produced a staggering amount of exceptional educational content in 2022, covering a breadth of topics ranging from foundational to masterclass, all of which are accessible on RAD Academy for CAR members and available for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit.

A selection of webinars brought together industry experts and touched on several timely issues like the Response to Global Contrast Shortage and Climate Change: The Role of Radiologists at Work and in the Community. The Canadian Emergency, Trauma, and Acute Care Radiology Society (CETARS) and the Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology (CSTR) shared their specialized expertise with a discussion on patients presenting breast emergencies, a masterclass series on Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), as well as an introductory curriculum on lung cancer screening. RAD Academy’s Radiologists-in-Training portal added two new programs designed and presented by the Resident and Fellow Section (RFS): an ongoing radiology research series, RFS Research 101 and Transitioning to Competence by Design, a national orientation session planned for the incoming resident physician cohort. New Insights4Imaging CME activities, the CAR’s journal-based self-assessment program, were added to the collection and are eligible for Section 3 MOC credit.

Each of these webinars and activities are available to access online and are complimentary for CAR members. The topics covered are timely and relevant from experts in radiology subspecialties and industry partners. Those looking for MOC credit or professional development activities will be sure to find something interesting and challenging.

 Webinars / Recorded Sessions

  • Climate Change: The Role of Radiologists at Work and in the Community
    • The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), Canadian Radiology Women (CRW) and the CAR collaborated to deliver an educational webinar discussing what radiology departments and radiologists can do to combat climate change. Hear from Drs. Maura Brown, Melissa Lem and Charlotte Yong-Hing discuss what radiology departments and radiologists can do to reduce their carbon footprint at work and in the community.
  • Peer Learning Guide
    • The CAR’s Working Group on Peer Learning has developed a national guide to establish an effective Peer Learning Program. This session examines the transition from peer review to peer learning, how to set up a peer learning program and presents testimonials from the radiology community.
  • Response to Global Contrast Shortage + UPDATE
    • Recognizing the global shortage of iodinated contrast media (ICM) and monitoring the situation at a national level with both our radiologist members and industry partners, the CAR met with Health Canada to gain a better understanding of its efforts to monitor and respond to the shortage. The CAR, Health Canada, radiology leaders, and industry partners came together to provide an update on the status of the global contrast shortage and its impact in Canada.
  • Success and Challenges When Implementing a Shortened Breast MRI Protocol
    • Presented in partnership between Bayer and the CAR, this session delved into the role of MRI in breast cancer screening and the use of shortened breast MRI protocols. A panel of Canadian radiologists and technologists share their experiences implementing shortened protocols at their institutions and the challenges that can arise when trying to introduce a shortened protocol.

CAR Affiliates – CPD Spotlight

  • CETARS: Emergent Breast and Peripartum Presentation in the ED
    • CETARS is pleased to present the next in their education offerings: Emergent Breast and Peripartum Presentation in the ED. Hear from Drs. Raman Verma, Prasaanthan Gopee-Ramanan, Sarah Barrett, and moderator Dr. Tracey Hiller as they discuss the features and management strategies for patients presenting with breast emergencies as well as review common and important causes of pelvic pain in the pregnant and peripartum patient.
  • CSTR ILD Masterclass Series
    • Thanks to an unrestricted education grant from Boehringer Ingelheim, the Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology (CSTR) developed a three-part ILD Masterclass Series to improve the Canadian radiology community’s knowledge of ILD and facilitate the interpretation of images and follow-up assessment as part of their clinical practice. Hear from Drs. Cameron Hague, Micheal McInnis, Carolina Souza, Daria Manos, Carole Dennie and David Lynch on a range of topics from interstitial pneumonitis, fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis to connective tissue disease ILD.
  • QUEST: Introduction to Lung Cancer Screening
    • Introducing QUEST, the CAR’s new Quality Education Screening Training program! In collaboration with the CSTR, we are pleased to announce the first course in this screening training program: Introduction to Lung Cancer Screening. Get started and check out PART I of this comprehensive educational content for radiologists focused on the imaging interpretation and reporting of lung cancer screening. Part II is coming soon! This series contains activities eligible for Section 3 credit.

Section 3-Eligible Activities

  • Insights4Imaging
    • The CAR’s accredited journal-based CME program, Insights4Imaging, features activities spanning the gamut of radiology subspecialties, modalities and topics that support lifelong learning. Each CME activity is eligible for Section 3 Self-Assessment Program (SAP) MOC credit.
      • Chemotherapy-Induced Toxicities: An Imaging Primer
      • Climate Change – How Radiologists Can Help
      • Is Oral Contrast Beneficial for Visualization of the Appendix in Low-weight Children?

Radiologists-in-Training Activities

  • RFS Research 101: Radiology Learning Opportunities for Radiologists-in-Training
    • Sharpen your pencils for the RFS Research 101 Webinars Series. Working in tandem with the CARJ, the CAR Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) developed a webinar series to provide radiologists-in-training with the tools and resources to create impactful and significant research. This series exposes trainees to critical information regarding data collection for radiology research as well as how to optimize the impact of their work. Check out the RFS Research 101 Summary on RAD Academy for a complete overview and see what we learned!
  • Transitioning to Competence by Design
    • Diagnostic radiology PGME programs are preparing to transition to Competence by Design for the incoming resident physician cohort. The CAR and the CAR RFS are committed to supporting this important educational transition. Check out the national orientation session led by the CAR RFS Education Committee and the Royal College Diagnostic Radiology Specialty Committee regarding Competence by Design.
