Setting ethical and legal guidance for AI in radiology

The recent White Paper titled Ethical and Legal Issues Related to Artificial Intelligence1, championed by members of the CAR AI Working Group, has received attention from not only the radiology community but also key decision-makers.

This past June, the CAR was invited to appear before the Federal Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics to discuss recommendations for ethical and privacy considerations in the implementation of AI. Dr. Tang represented the CAR and the broader radiology community2. He was enthusiastically received by the committee and was afforded the opportunity to highlight the recommendations included within the white paper.  A focal point of the discussion was when Dr. Tang was asked about the future of radiologists given the potential of AI in medical imaging. Dr. Tang’s response was to quote the late Mark Twain: “the rumours of our demise are vastly exaggerated”.

The work does not stop there. The AI Working Group continues to have a voice on AI as it impacts radiology. The Strategic Innovation Fund grant, which was announced by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development earlier this summer. The consortium led by Imagia and the Terry Fox Research Institute was awarded $49 million from the federal government for the development and implementation of AI. The CAR is pleased to be part of this consortium along with academic partners, including the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology and looks forward to what the future will bring.
