Education on the Horizon: Virtual Trainee Day, Radiology Leadership Program, and Upcoming Webinars

The CAR Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) is excited to once again host Virtual Trainee Day (VTD) on Wednesday, February 10, 2027, featuring a full day of radiology education tailored specifically to trainees.

This year’s theme Every Heartbeat, Every Breath: Deciphering Cardiothoracic Radiology promises to deliver another engaging and inspiring educational experience.

“I have found it to be a helpful and engaging educational event,” said Dr. Chloe DesRoche, RFS Chair. “This year I am excited about what the team has put together, the speaker lineup is excellent and the program should have something for everyone from medical students through senior residents.”

The agenda for the day includes four didactic lectures headlined by major Canadian names in thoracic radiology – Dr. Daria Manos of Dalhousie, Dr. Jana Taylor of McGill, Dr. Kate Hanneman of the University of Toronto, and Dr. Cameron Hague of UBC. Each of these sessions will consist of a 20-minute lecture and 10 minutes of questions from the audience. The range of thoracic focused topics include Incidental Pulmonary Nodules and Adenocarcinoma (Dr. Manos), Acute Aortic Pathologies (Dr. Taylor), Cardiac CT/MRI (Dr. Hanneman), and Interstitial Lung Disease (Dr. Hague).

Dr. Karl Narvacan, former VTD Working Group member from the University of Toronto, will lead a 15-minute session that outlines the process of applying to fellowship, a critical step in the career journey of radiologists.

During the mid-event break, participants can put their diagnostic skills to the test in an interactive case-based game, where they will review clinical cases and compete to identify the correct diagnosis answers.

Finally, the day will finish with a perennial favourite session – the Junior and Senior Hot Seats. These sessions are fast-paced and interactive, engaging the participants in real-time diagnostic challenges. The primary goal is to stimulate critical thinking, enhance diagnostic skills, and provide participants with the chance to receive constructive feedback from experienced radiologists and senior residents in a supportive and collaborative environment.

“Beyond the content, I hope trainees come away feeling connected to a national community,” said Dr. DesRoche. “The hot seat sessions put residents in front of expert radiologists working through real cases in a supportive setting, and the fellowship application session offers honest, practical advice on fellowship applications. ”
