CAR/CHAR National Grand Rounds
Overview
The Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology (CHAR) proposed the creation of a CHAR Canadian Academic Radiology Grand Rounds Program to enhance collaboration, educational excellence, and national identity across Canadian radiology departments. The initiative is intended to provide a unified, high-quality, RCPSC-accredited educational series accessible to radiologists, trainees, and allied professionals across the country.
The program will consist of monthly one-hour Zoom-based grand rounds, delivered from September to June, rotating through all Canadian academic radiology departments. Each institution will host approximately one session per year, highlighting local expertise, innovations, research, and most importantly, practical applications of radiology.
Needs Assessment
CHAR identified a need for a coordinated national educational initiative following discussions among academic department leaders and recognition of variability in access to subspecialty expertise and educational programming across Canadian institutions. Existing grand rounds are typically delivered locally, limiting opportunities for national collaboration and the dissemination of leading practices. A centralized Canadian Academic Radiology Grand Rounds Program would address these gaps by providing equitable access to high-quality, RCPSC-accredited educational content for radiologists, trainees, and allied professionals nationwide. The program is intended to strengthen continuing professional development, facilitate knowledge sharing across institutions, promote consistency in evidence-informed radiology practice while fostering a stronger national academic community, and increase the global reach of Canadian radiology.
Target Audience
This National Grand Rounds series is designed for all general and subspecialty radiologists as well as radiology trainees (residents and fellows) throughout Canada and across the world.

The CAR/CHAR National Grand Rounds was developed by the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology and constitute the Scientific Planning Committee for this series.
All members of the Scientific Planning Committee are Chairs or Chair-Chiefs of their respective institutions. COI forms were collected and the following conflicts were disclosed:
Dr. Michael Patlas reports receiving royalties from Elsevier and honoraria from Springer; Dr. Jonathon Leipsic reports consulting for and holding stock in HeartFlow. He also serves on an advisory board for Circle Cardiovascular Imaging (Circle CVI) and receives modest consultancy compensation; Dr. Carl Chartrand-Lefebvre reports participation as a co-researcher on an NIH-funded HIV research grant. He also reports scholarly work related to equity, diversity, and representation in Canadian radiology conferences, including a submitted manuscript examining gender and ethnic representation at CAR and SRQ scientific meetings.

This series received an unrestricted education grant from Sectra.
Accreditation and Designation Statements
This CAR/CHAR National Grand Rounds Series is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The full series is approved for a maximum of 10 credits (Section 1, Group Learning).
AMA Accreditation Statement
