The BRC unites a dedicated group of radiologists with a shared mission: to advance breast imaging in Canada through education, research, and collaboration. “It is exciting to see the BRC as the CAR’s newest affiliate,” said CAR President Dr. Alison Harris. “There is now an opportunity for CAR members and trainees to share knowledge regarding the practice of breast imaging in Canada and to learn the latest developments from experts in the field.”

Dr. Flegg brings extensive leadership and expertise to her role. She is the Provincial Medical Director of Breast Imaging for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, the Radiologist Director of the Saskatoon City Hospital Breast Health Centre, and the Radiologist Lead for the CAR Mammography Accreditation Program. Dr. Flegg has worked in diverse clinical and academic settings across Canada, providing her with deep insight into the strengths and collaborative efforts of Canadian breast imagers.

She says this new Affiliate Society will serve as a strong voice for breast radiologists nationwide and will play a crucial role in enhancing breast cancer detection, diagnosis, and patient care.

“Creating an affiliate society dedicated to breast health was essential to provide a focused network for radiologists and trainees interested in advancing breast imaging,” said Dr. Flegg. “Breast health presents unique clinical challenges – early detection, diverse imaging techniques, the integration of diagnostic and interventional procedures – all of which benefit from specialized knowledge-sharing and collaboration. The goal of forming the BRC is to foster excellence and innovation in breast imaging and improve patient care across the country, leveraging the collaborative framework of the CAR while maintaining a distinct mandate responsive to evolving needs in breast imaging.”

Dr. Flegg says she is most excited about cultivating a vibrant, national community of professionals dedicated to excellence in breast imaging.

“The launch of the BRC opens doors for collaborative teaching, inter-provincial knowledge sharing, and joint initiatives with other organizations who already work with the CAR. I look forward to using our platform to elevate standards, nurture future leaders in breast imaging, and ensure that radiologists and trainees have access to the latest diagnostic and interventional best practices, which ultimately benefits patient outcomes across Canada.”

She says the immediate next steps are to build active engagement among CAR members and their networks, develop educational events that are specific to breast imaging, and collaborate closely with CAR partners on research and guidelines.

“We will also prioritize collaborating with health system partners to shape policies supportive of optimal breast health,” said Dr. Flegg.

Enhance Your Career by Joining the BRC or Another Affiliate Society

Getting involved is easy and complimentary for CAR members. Any member can join one of the six Affiliate Societies through the CAR member portal or by emailing the CAR and indicating their intent to join.

“We encourage all radiologists and trainees who are passionate about breast imaging to connect and shape the future of this vital field with us,” said Dr. Flegg.

Members will be able to volunteer for committees or working groups and contribute to educational projects and guidelines, all of which have lasting benefits for your career.

“Becoming a member of an Affiliate Society was such a bonus,” said Dr. Tanya Chawla, Past-President of the Canadian Society of Abdominal Radiology (CSAR). “It enhanced my connections with others in the body imaging community and allowed me to work with colleagues who are equally passionate about espousing higher standards of excellence in clinical and research activity.”

She says the Affiliate Societies are open for anyone to join, regardless of clinical setting or career stage.

“Everyone brings their unique perspectives and contributes to the excellent work that is being done,” said Dr. Chawla. “It’s a no-brainer – and did I mention it’s free if you are a CAR member?”
