Profiling a radiologist who bridges the gap between medicine and humanity!
Dr. Kari Visscher is a radiologist specializing in Musculoskeletal Imaging. She recently completed a fellowship in Ottawa and will be working as a staff radiologist at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Cambridge, Ontario starting in July 2018.
Dr. Visscher is looking forward to her new role after a long academic journey. Her path has been interesting and longer than most of her colleagues. Initially Dr. Visscher began her studies in biology at Queens University. After which she completed a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Communications at the University of Toronto. It was during this time that she was exposed to medical science. She took a keen interest in medicine and given her artistic background became passionate about recreating humanity and emotions in medicine through art.
Dr. Visscher, a gifted painter has published various pieces of her art work in hospitals throughout Ontario. The pieces pictured above were purchased by CAR’s Past-President Dr. William Miller and donated to the CAR Office.
Dr. Visscher’s muse is medicine and through her work she is trying to help others understand the human side of care and the real patient experience. “Art breaks down barriers—it’s neutral ground. I want to portray my real-life experiences as a radiologist and involve the patients in the work. I want people to know that we are part of their care, and even though we may have a piece of technology between us, it doesn’t take away from how much we care for you and your health care journey.”
Dr. Visscher is building a following. Several CAR members have commented on her work. At the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr. Visscher participated in a contest demonstrating the value of radiology. Her goal was to showcase the value radiologists bring to patients through her work recreating interactions.
Dr. Visscher is a woman of many talents. She is a mother of two young boys and a busy physician who also spends approximately 100 hours of work on each oil painting, she is truly an inspiration to us all.
