General information
Regarding your submission:
Abstracts should be submitted in a format ready for publication. Please proofread to avoid any typographic or grammatical errors. It is recommended that authors prepare their abstracts in advance using any standard word processing system, and then ‘copy and paste’ the elements from the word processing document into the appropriate spaces in the submission system. Please do not include references, acknowledgements, graphics, tables or figures in your abstract body.
All accepted abstracts will be invited to provide posters in electronic format. The authors may also present in traditional poster format, in addition to the electronic presentation.
During the submission process, authors must specify if the abstract was accepted elsewhere and include such details as the date, location and event. This does not necessarily disqualify an abstract from being selected.
You can edit or delete your abstract online at any time before December 20, 2017. If you wish to withdraw your abstract after that date you must inform the CAR Office in writing via email.
If you are accepted:
Detailed notifications of acceptance and guidelines for presentation will be sent by email by January 19, 2018.
Primary or secondary authors chosen for poster and oral presentations (regardless of format) must be registered and are required to pay the applicable registration fee an all other expenses involved in attending the ASM.
Important abstract elements:
- Purpose clearly stated
- Precise description of methods and materials (patients), especially patient recruitment, analysis and statistics
- Precise description of results with numbers and statistics
- Statistics should be appropriate
- Work-in-progress is only acceptable for extremely innovative or interesting approaches
- Coherence between stated purpose, methods and materials, results and conclusion (M&M should be suited to address the stated purpose, results should reflect M&M, conclusions should address previous sections)
- All abstracts must have a maximum of 250 words and be text-based (with one table, charts or graph in JPEG or PDF format). The only exception is for the Educational Exhibit abstracts, where authors have up to an additional 80-word section to complete on the background of their submission.

Categories for Abstract Submission
Abstracts may be submitted in any of the following five categories. The first two categories are open to radiology trainees only. Please identify the category the best describes your project or study. A brief description of each submission category is provided below.
With the exception of the Educational Exhibit, top submissions in each category will be invited to give 10-minute oral presentations (8 minute presentation + 2 minute Q&A). If your abstract is selected, it is mandatory that you be prepared to give an oral presentation. In the Scientific Research Project and Value of Radiology Project categories, these presentations are open to staff radiologists as well as trainees.
1. Departmental Clinical Audit Project [Trainees Only, mandatory oral presentation]
For the purpose of the Clinical Departmental Audit Project competition at the CAR, the principal lead of this audit project must be a resident, a fellow or a medical student and must be mentored by a staff radiologist. These presentations should demonstrate an improvement to patient care and outcomes through a systematic review of care against explicit criteria and an explanation of the improvements made. Involvement of all health care workers affected by this project, both in project design and implementation, is strongly encouraged. This competition includes a mandatory 8-minute oral presentation and 2 minutes for questions/answers. Awards for the top three presentations are sponsored by CAR/CHAR.
2. Radiologist-in-Training Research Project [Trainees Only, mandatory oral presentation]
Submissions are to describe a hypothesis-driven research project with defined outcomes and a reasonable sample size. Case reports should not be submitted to this category. Multiple research projects may be submitted; however, only one may be presented by a given radiologist-in-training. Each project must be mentored by a staff radiologist. This competition includes a mandatory 8-minute oral presentation and 2 minutes for questions/answers. Awards for the top three presentations are sponsored by CAR/CHAR.
3. Educational Exhibits (electronic +/- poster format)
Submissions in this category are informative exhibits designed to review known topics. They are not new hypothesis-driven endeavors. The presentation is to provide a synthesis of facts, relate them in new ways, or extract common threads from diverse data. Presentations should aim to be memorable, potentially influencing clinical behaviours, and to be as simple and direct as the selected topic permits. Awards for the top three presentations are sponsored by CAR/CRF.
4. Scientific Research Project (electronic +/- poster +/- optional oral presentation)
Submissions in this category will describe a hypothesis-driven research project with defined outcomes and a reasonable sample size. Case reports should not be submitted to this category. New for 2018, an oral option is available, which includes an 8-minute oral presentation and 2 minutes for questions/answers. Awards for the top three oral presentations are sponsored by CAR/CRF. Please note, that you are only eligible for an award in this category if you choose to make an oral presentation.
5. Value of Radiology Project (new category) (electronic +/- poster + mandatory oral presentation)
Submissions in this category are informative exhibits designed to review known or emerging facts related specifically to the value of radiology. The presentation is to provide a synthesis of information on various topics, relate them in new ways, or extract common threads from diverse data. For example, projects may consider the economic impact of radiology and diagnostic imaging, how radiology adds value by enhancing diagnostic capacity and appropriateness of care and treatments, or how radiology drives health system improvements and delivers optimal patient outcomes. The projects should advance and enhance the value of radiology in Canada, but may also consider international data and comparisons. This competition includes a mandatory 8-minute oral presentation and 2 minutes for questions/answers which can be presented by any member of the project. Awards for the top three presentations are sponsored by CAR/CRF.
