A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF THE CAR

The CAR is only as strong as its membership

The Canadian Association of Radiologists relies on its members to be able to undertake crucial work to represent all Canadian radiologists in a united voice through its advocacy efforts, improving the quality and safety of the profession by developing key quality assurance publications, such as guidelines, and helping to inform the public about the profession.

As the summer comes to an end, I am pleased to see that over 90% of our members have re-instilled their support in the CAR by renewing their membership. As encouraging as this is, we are still counting on all other radiologists to show their support and help us further our work for the profession.

There is still time to renew your CAR membership or become a member for 2014. Only through your support can we continue to undertake crucial work on your behalf such as:

The CAR still has many projects underway for 2014, including:

Being a member of the CAR helps to strengthen the authority needed to help shape our future and defend our interests as radiologists. Having one unifying national association that represents all radiologists helps to ensure that we proactively take charge of our profession and the future of Canadian radiology.

I urge you to renew your CAR membership or become a member today and make a difference to your profession. We greatly appreciate your support, and hope to count on your membership for 2014. Together, we can make a difference.

We look forward to including you amongst our loyal members.

CRF RESEARCH GRANTS AND DONATIONS

We invite you to apply!

The Canadian Radiological Foundation (CRF), in its mission to promote the art and science of radiology through research and education, supports studies and research projects in diagnostic radiology or interventional procedures. To this end, the CRF provides opportunities to apply for research or study grants whose aim is to benefit radiology in Canada. It has funded numerous projects over the past few years and looks forward to receiving more grant applications from CAR members.

For more details on CRF grant application rules, application form and compliance templates, click here.

Donating to the CRF

We would like to thank all of our donors for their generous contributions to the Canadian Radiological Foundation (CRF). As a registered charity, the CRF undertakes critical research and supports educational and research projects which benefit Canadian radiology and help to establish radiologists as leaders on the international stage. However, it can only do so with the generosity and support of its donors.

If you would like to make a donation today, please click here.

Please help us achieve the CRF’s mission to “promote the art and science of radiology through research and education”.

We thank you kindly for your consideration and your support.

Let’s all invest in our future.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY – 2014

The CAR proudly supports the third International Day of Radiology (IDoR), celebrated on November 8. With over 100 societies from all 5 continents taking part in the 2014 celebration, it is a wonderful occasion to commemorate the history and innovation of this medical specialization. This year’s main theme is brain imaging, which will highlight the important role that radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis and management of a wide variety of brain diseases.

As the national voice of radiology in Canada, the CAR has been a proud supported of IDoR since its inception in 2012 and supports any Canadian groups who are planning on celebrating this day with an event. If you, or your centre, are planning an event to commemorate the International Day of Radiology (IDoR) this year, we’d love to hear from you!

Once available, the CAR will be posting IDoR’s third book in the series The Story of Radiology, which chronicles the exciting, often strange, history of radiological development and innovation. A book on brain imaging will also be produced providing insight into the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases. To read volumes 1 and 2 of The Story of Radiology, and other publications about radiology, click here.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

As part of the 2015 Joint Congress on Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, the CAR will be holding two oral presentation contests and two electronic exhibit contests which are open to all CAR members:

Oral Presentations

Residents, fellows and medical students enrolled in Canadian radiology programs or performing research projects in radiology are invited to submit scientific abstracts in the following two categories for oral presentation during the CAR Annual Scientific Meeting:

Departmental Clinical Audit Project Contest

These presentations seek to improve patient care and outcomes through a systematic review of care against explicit criteria and the review of change. The project should be mentored by a staff radiologist with possible involvement of all levels of staff in the department including clerical staff, technologists and radiologists, as interventions or changes may require acceptance and support from all departmental personnel. For more information, click here.

Radiologists-in-Training Contest

Submissions in this category will describe a hypothesis-driven research project with defined outcomes and a reasonable sample size. Case reports should not be submitted to this category.

Multiple research projects may be submitted; however, a maximum of only one may be presented by a given radiologist-in-training. If accepted, a letter outlining the nature and extent of the supervisor’s contribution must be written by the supervisor and submitted.

Electronic Exhibits

Radiologists, residents, medical students and other medical professionals are invited to submit an abstract for electronic presentation in any area of radiology. It is encouraged to tie the presented topic to this year’s theme, Doing the Right Thing at the Right Time: Appropriate Imaging Utilization.

Scientific Exhibits

Submissions in this category will describe a hypothesis-driven research project with defined outcomes and a reasonable sample size. Case reports should not be submitted to this category.

Educational Exhibits

Submissions in this category are informative exhibits designed to review known facts. The presentation is to provide a synthesis of such facts, relate them in new ways or extract common threads from diverse data. They should aim at being memorable, potentially influencing clinical behaviours, and be as simple and direct as the topic permits.

CAR contests offer cash awards and are judged by experienced radiologists.
The abstract submission portal closes on January 22, 2015.

For more details on submitting an abstract, click here.
