Meeting Overview

The Canadian Association of Radiologists 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting will take place from April 22 to 25, 2010, in Montréal, QC, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The Annual Scientific Meeting of the CAR will be an exciting look at the future of radiology. Time and information management are crucial components of every radiologist’s workday. We will share information on how to adapt and manage these increasingly important and constantly advancing factors to optimize your workflow, improve patient safety and enhance your practice. An exciting mix of didactic lectures, debates and hands-on workshops will be offered in areas such as coronary CT angiography, obstetrical ultrasound and head to toe imaging.

Among the excellent speakers confirmed for this year, our Keynote Speakers will be:

Dr. Paul Chang
University of Chicago School of Medicine

Dr. Elliot Fishman
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Special Guest Speaker:
Dr. David Butler-Jones
Chief Public Health Officer of Canada

Course Objectives

At the end of the conference, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the most useful ways to optimize workflow in the DI clinic or hospital department, including workload sharing strategies, structured reporting, and enhanced radiologist/clinician communication.
  2. Develop strategies to optimally manage increasingly large data sets, particularly in CT, as now prevalent in DI.
  3. Integrate the diverse strategies needed by radiologists and technologists to operate a quality-oriented coronary CT angiography program, including patient selection, radiation dose minimization, acquisition and interpretation and management of extra-coronary findings.
  4. Identify the most important imaging findings in common brain and spinal cord tumours and their mimics.
  5. Compare the solutions offered by a variety of PACS vendors, to the most pressing problems faced by radiologists in data management.
  6. Explain the most important elements of second trimester pre-natal ultrasound fetal assessment, as well as describe anomalies seen with ultrasound and MRI in the first and second trimesters.
  7. Establish criteria for ultrasound, mammography, and MRI evaluation of the breast, and select appropriate patients for biopsy.
  8. List the body imaging findings in common pulmonary, abdominal, musculoskeletal, breast, neurologic disorders, in an interactive case-based setting.
  9. Demonstrate the ongoing role of the well-performed plain radiograph in evaluation of paediatric, abdominal, spine, and chest disorders.
  10. Respond rapidly and adequately to emergency cardiac, respiratory or anaphylactic situations in a diagnostic imaging or interventional radiology setting (ACLS).

Coronary CT Angiography Simulation Workshops

Participants of the Canadian Association of Radiologists 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting are offered an opportunity to take part in exciting Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA) Simulation Workshops. The CCTA Simulation Workshops will take place in the afternoon of Friday, April 23rd, following a morning CCTA didactic lectures. The workshops are intended as an introductory experience to the science and technology of CCTA.

Concurrent workshops will be held in three different rooms, each equipped with a number of workstations by a single vendor. A maximum of two participants will be assigned per workstation. Registrants will be divided into groups, rotating through each of the rooms and viewing cases with the CCTA experts and applications specialists. The instructor in each room will be a Radiologist with CCTA expertise. Applications specialists will be available to assist with software and system functions.

Participants are to enrol for these workshops upon registering for the Annual Scientific Meeting and will pay a separate fee of $100 (these funds will be directed to the Canadian Radiological Foundation and an official tax receipts will be issued).

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Radiologists

Designed by radiologists for radiologists, this advanced cardiac life support program, taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel the evening of April 21 and at the new state-of-the-art simulation-based training centre located at the Université de Montréal throughout the day on April 22, addresses the specific radiologist scenarios and ACLS management.

This is a bilingual course. Participants who have successfully completed the course will receive a certificate from the Fondation des maladies du cœur du Canada (for Francophones) or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation (for Anglophones).
